Does the name Artist scare the heck out of you and send you into a defensive and denial pattern using words I have heard so many times, “I have not got a creative bone in my body”, “I have not made art since preschool”, “I cannot draw to save my life”, “ I have no idea where to start”.
I am here to challenge you.
Anything that you get lost in and experiment with, that brings you joy, and often feels like play is being creative. Writing, making art, colouring in, gardening, building something, making bread and pasta and cookies, sewing, fixing up a car, making curtains…. You get the point. YOU ARE ALREADY CREATIVE - it’s just a fact and part of being human.
You do not need a man-made degree or certificate or good marks in school to make art or use your innate creativity. It’s a lie.
“CREATIVITY REQUIRES THE COURAGE TO LET GO OF CERTAINTY.” by Erich Fromm
Follow your curiosity. What has been swirling around in your thoughts about maybe - just maybe - giving something a go - what is it? What has captured your attention? At this point I’m encouraging you to consider what it is that sparks your interest and just get curious about it. Read about it, maybe get a book from the library, is there a one day course somewhere that you could do, a group you could join just to get a taste and see where that leads
There is a brilliant book called BIG MAGIC by Elizabeth Gilbert and it is worth a nice enjoyable read to capture this curiosity thing…
Things will not always go as anticipated in your creative exploration and following your curiosity. You will more than likely face your inner critic’s fears, uncertainty and self-doubt BUT you will also experience joy seeping into your life and filling in some creative spaces as your confidence begins to grow and you start to trust yourself and your creativity.
Much Love
